Source Protection Plans PDF Print E-mail

OGE specialises in providing all work related to hydrogeological assessments in the planning process as well as voluntary schemes by Group Water Schemes (GWS) and industry to protect water sources. The source  of a borehole or well should be protected from pollution to enable the long term sustainable supply of good quality groundwater. A Source Protection Plan and risk assessment are often requested as part the planning process.

OGE is the lead consultant for hydrogeology for the Western River Basin District (WRBD) in relation to ground water protection and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. As part of this work OGE provided the specification for the Establishment of Water Source Protection Zones to the National Ground Water Working Group (NGWWG) lead by Donal Daly of the EPA, to comply with the Water Framework Directive nationally.

As part of the process to implement the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) in Ireland, each of the river basins through the County Council have to delineate Safeguard Zones or Source Protection Zones (SPZ’s) for a number of drinking water abstraction sources within each River Basin.  Article 7 of the Directive requires that Member States ensure the necessary protection of water bodies used for abstraction of water intended for human consumption. The Minister can provide regulations for the establishment of source protection zones under section 32 (3)O of the Water Services Act 2007. To this end, Member States may establish safeguard zones for the protection of those bodies. In the case of ground water the Source Protection Zones (SPZ) will be delineated as per Groundwater Protection Schemes Guidelines (DELG/EPA/GSI, 1999).See our training brochureSee also Always Go Straight to the Source
